Fly lines take a beating and one of the places that fly anglers just don't understand what is
happening to their fly lines is in their vehicles. I am just as guilty of this as everyone else.
However, it's actually not too hard to remedy the situation. If you put your reel bags or reels in the trunk
realize that vapors from your gas line will be absorbed by the reels and lines. Fly lines are particular
susceptible to myriad of volatile substances emanating from bug sprays, sun screen and anything else. This problems
is magnified by heat. Do you know how hot is in your car and reel bag? This is a sure prescription for
fly line finish damage.
So what can you do? Well actually it's very simple. Most fly anglers carry coolers and ice
chests so just make sure you carry ones large enough to hold your reels. You can place your entire reel bag
in a large plastic zip lock bag and put in the ice chest. Or you can just put the reels in the bag and put
them in the chest.
The cold will protect your lines from the excessive heat and problems associated with other
elements in the area of your fly lines. It's cheap and easy and it works. So get yourself some large heavy
duty zip lock bags and take care of it and while you have the cooler out.. and have a cold one for me!
